Sialic-acid-binding immunoglobulin-like lectin-11 (Siglec-11) and Siglec-16 are recently identified human-specific CD33-related Siglec that bind to sialic acids ofthe glycocalyx and are expressed on microglia. In this project, we demonstrated that microglial Siglec-11 had neuroprotective effects dependent on the sialydated glycocalyx of neurons. Moreover, we established transgenic mice expressing Siglec-11 under the microglial Ibal-promoter. We now propose to analyze the role of Siglec-11 in neuroinflammatory animal models including experimental autoimmune encephalomyellfis (EAE) and APP/PSI-transgenic mice.
