The goal of this project is to investigate and address the inter- and intra-individual variety of nonverbal signals of an explainee for inclusive, adaptive, and transparent monitoring of an explainee’s understanding. In empirical studies, we will examine how this variety affects the monitoring of an explainee’s understanding in both human-human and human-machine explanations. Based on these findings, we will develop a co-constructive approach in which a machine explainer and a human explainee together construct the meaning of the explainee’s signals of understanding. By making the monitoring explainable, we will empower the user to correct and update the machine’s interpretation of their social signals.
