The Institute of Electrical Energy Systems (LEES) at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) conducts research and teaching in various fields of electrical power engineering. Our focus of research comprises the design and operation of future grid structures as well as the integration of renewable energy systems and storages under the aspect of grid stability and service security. For our research, we operate a high voltage and high current laboratory for hardware tests and diagnostics of novel electrical equipment and various laboratories for power system simulation. The focus of the Institute regarding high voltage and high current engineering lays on fundamental material research and the development of prototypes. In addition to fundamental research, the Institute also conducts standard tests on fully developed products and system components. Electrical equipment and system components need to be tested thoroughly in order to determine their operating behavior and physical limitations. Being able to conduct high voltage and high current tests is a unique feature of our laboratories in the scientific landscape. The aim of the present application is to expand the measurement capabilities of our high voltage laboratory with a high voltage direct current (HVDC) test system. The requested HVDC test system will provide the opportunity to perform specific experimental research on the assets of emerging new hybrid (AC/DC) network structures. This opens up a new area of research at the FAU that takes current and future developments of electrical energy systems into account. This application goes hand in hand with various infrastructural measures, which have been carried out by the university in recent years. It includes safety measures as well as the long-term guarantee of constant test conditions by installing air conditioning in the high voltage test hall.
