Subject Area Basic Research in Biology and Medicine
Term Funded in 2022
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 508216844

The medical faculty of the University of Augsburg was founded in December 2016. On January 1, 2019, the former Klinikum Augsburg was converted into the Universitätsklinikum Augsburg. The one and only model study course for human medicine in Bavaria was launched in the 2019/20 winter semester. In addition to the two pillars of patient care and teaching, it is now important to establish a nationally and internationally competitive research landscape in the field of biomedical life sciences over the next few years. The Institute for Theoretical Medicine (ITM) and the associated chairs for anatomy and cell biology, biochemistry and molecular biology as well as physiology play a special role in the development of basic research in Augsburg. Following the recommendations of the Science Council, an interdisciplinary research environment is being created at the ITM with the aim of "flexibly combining the specialist areas of theoretical and selected areas of clinical-theoretical medicine and thus promoting cooperation between theoretical-experimental and clinically oriented scientists". The applicant chair holders feel highly committed to this goal and have been cooperating closely with each other since their appointment in 2019, including the clinical-theoretical and clinical departments. The large research equipment named in this application (ITM 01-05) result on the one hand from the specific requirements of the applying chairs and are essential for the continuation of their scientific work at the Augsburg location. In addition, these devices are to be seen in the context of the faculty's long-term large-scale equipment strategy and form the basis for a core facility / (large) equipment infrastructure, which will be further expanded over the next few years and made accessible to all members of the medical faculty and cooperating working groups from other faculties will.
