Machine tool for precise electrical discharge machining

Subject Area Production Technology
Term Funded in 2022
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 509924008

The chair of manufacturing technology with focus machining is headed since on September 1st, 2019 by Prof. Hackert-Oschätzchen. With the appointment of Prof. Hackert-Oschätzchen one main intention is to expand the scientific orientation of the chair to include precise electrical discharge machining. Precise electrical discharge machining is an ablating technology in precision and micro-manufacturing, which is applied to manufacture tools and machine elements with the highest precision requirements. In the Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg there is no machine tool for precise electrical discharge machining available, which makes it necessary to procure the machine tool for precise electrical discharge machining. In particular due to the process-related advantages, such as machining independent of the mechanical workpiece properties and burr free machining, precise electrical discharge machining is applied for highly stressed components and products made of high-strength materials. By help of the machine tool, the process variants of precise electrical discharge sinking, precise electrical discharge drilling and precise electrical discharge milling can be researched. As a result, in addition to micro-manufacturing issues in the near-surface area, research work in the macroscopic component area with a focus on precise shaping, resource-efficient production and functional surfaces can also be performed. The machine tool addresses components with machining areas up to a size of around 600 cm², which can be processed with a required pulsed current of up to 80 A. In addition to researching the basic process understanding of precise electrical discharge machining, resource-efficient technologies, process control of precise electrical discharge machining through simulation as well as interfaces and data chains for digital twins of precise electrical discharge machining will be research priorities at the chair of manufacturing technology with focus machining.
