A transfer project with the company ASK Chemicals GmbH is providing a sustainable contribution to the recycling of aluminum matrix composite (AMC) alloys. These alloys have excellent mechanical, as well as tribological properties due to their reinforcement phase, and are mainly used for vehicle and transport component engineering. Silicon carbide (SiC) represents the most widely used reinforcing material in the global MMC market due to its high demand from the electrical, automotive, transportation and aero-space industries. In the third funding period in the SFB 920, considerable insights were gained on the behavior of SiC particles in gravity casting. The filtration efficiency was determined by interaction effects between reinforcement particles and metallic matrix. Furthermore, the formation of SiC agglomerates could be attributed to these effects. The objective of the project is thus to separate these particles and to recycle the aluminum matrix composite (AMC) by means of rotation-assisted filtration.
