Unveiling the principles of solar magneto-convection

Subject Area Astrophysics and Astronomy
Term since 2023
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 511508209

The interaction of magnetic fields with convective motions is the dominant source of solar activity. The general theme of the proposed project is to better understand the convection in magnetized plasma. We aim to use satellite data for statistical studies of pores to assess their lifetimes and formation mechanisms with respect to a critical value of the vertical component of the magnetic field that inhibits convective motions in stable sunspots umbrae. We also plan to use high-resolution ground-based data to investigate the fine-scale interplay between convective cells and magnetic fields as well as to carry out a statistical study of the influence of the magnetic field on the properties of convective cells. Additionally, we plan to compare observations with simulations of convection in strong magnetic fields and with a database of existing and new sunspots simulations. The goals of the project will be achieved through a close collaboration between the Astronomical Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences in Ondřejov and the Leibniz Institute for Solar Physics (KIS) in Freiburg.
