With the proposed project, Freie Universität Berlin (FU) is pursuing the goal of enabling publication in quality-assured open access journals and the publication of open access books for FU members in terms of diversity and fairness. In order to obtain reliable data on publication volumes and costs at FU, a virtual information budget will be established that summarizes centralized and decentralized as well as direct and indirect costs for literature supply and publications. The project can benefit various stakeholders at the FU and take different needs into account. The necessary adaptation of existing systems is aimed at increasing interoperability and holistic, needs-based harmonization of infrastructures, tools and workflows as well as the systematic adaptation of specific interfaces and workflows. The development of an improved publication and cost monitoring system is intended to provide a comprehensive overview of financial streams, workflows and transaction costs at the end of the project after 2028 in order to be able to make well-founded strategic decisions for the future on this basis. In this way, FU is actively contributing to an overarching structural adjustment and development for a sustainable open access transformation.
