The German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA) conducts research on and in collaboration with the regions of the Global South: Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East. Open access to information and knowledge, along with a dedicated Open Access policy, has been a core element of GIGA’s strategy for many years. The aim is to lower barriers for GIGA researchers to publish in Open Access, to provide the necessary funding, and to inform, advise and support them throughout the research process with integrated services. The current project phase, which runs until the end of 2025, has focused on structural changes. The follow-up project will consolidate these and continue to enable GIGA researchers to disseminate their research results in Open Access, improving discoverability, visibility, and ensure long-term preservation. Grants for Open Access publications from DFG-funded projects make a significant contribution to covering publication costs.
