Guaranteeing a uniformly high quality-of-service, needed for applications with mission-critical requirements, is particularly challenging over inherently stochastic and unreliable wireless channels. The solution to this issue can be found in the newly emerging concept of reconfigurable radio environment, where the wireless channel is no longer treated as a given uncontrollable entity but can be programmed via reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) to facilitate communication. This subproject borrows the concepts of multi-mechanism adaption and transitions introduced in the CRC MAKI to address a fundamental open challenge in realizing reconfigurable radio environments, that is the resource-efficient reconfiguration of extremely large RISs in highly dynamic communication systems.
