This project focuses on how to effectively communicate information between automated systems and human users overseeing them, e.g., in drone control centres. Directing the operator’s attention requires the interface to decide, which information to communicate and how. This project develops an approach for cooperative UIs that can reason about how the user perceives and processes information. We model interface and user as rational agents that cooperate towards a shared communication goal. To decide what to communicate, and how, we combine methods from AI planning with linguistic frameworks of rational communication between humans. Together with models of human attention and information processing, we enable the interface to reason about knowledge and perception of the user.
