Exploring Magnetic Relaxation in Dinuclear 4f Compounds Using Theory and Experiment (B01)

Subject Area Experimental Condensed Matter Physics
Inorganic Molecular Chemistry - Synthesis and Characterisation
Physical Chemistry of Molecules, Liquids and Interfaces, Biophysical Chemistry
Theoretical Chemistry: Molecules, Materials, Surfaces
Term since 2023
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 471424360

The aim of the project is to explore details of the electronic structures of Ln2 dinuclear compounds by combining experiment and theory to discover why and how two 4f ions are often better than one in terms of Single Molecule Magnet (SMM) behavior. A major goal is quenching of the zero-field quantum tunneling of the mag-netization. For this purpose, families of dinuclear compounds will be synthesized, characterized and their magnetic behavior analyzed. For all these compounds quantum chemical calculations on the energetically low-lying electronic states will be performed. Analysis of the results will lead to magnetostructural correlations which in turn inform the subsequent synthetic strategy for improving SMM behavior.
