Characterizing source properties of NW Bohemia / Vogtland earthquake swarms exploiting novel network and waveform processing tools (CHASING).

Subject Area Geophysics
Term since 2023
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 517982028

The Chasing project was originally proposed for three years and funded for two years. The reviewers recommended an extension. The project has already achieved its first year objective with the compilation of seismic data from ICDP array/borehole instruments as well as the surface stations within 100 km of Nový Kostel and highly accurate hypocentral locations with < 0.1 km uncertainty. It is considered that the results of the first year are highly satisfactory, showing significant progress in seismic data acquisition and event detection using novel techniques. The second year of the project started on October 1, 2024 and is dedicated to the improvement of the relative moment tensor method developed for the analysis of seismic sources of swarms and its comparison with absolute ones. Due to the success of the work, a one-year extension is requested to further build on the results and to perform a more detailed analysis of the seismic swarms, focusing in particular on high-resolution earthquake rupture parameters. This requested 1-year extension would allow us to resolve high-resolution earthquake rupture parameters from the results of the first and second year objectives. This additional time would be crucial to gain deeper insights into the fluid dynamics in the NW Bohemia/Vogtland region, which may provide new insights into swarm activity. At the end of the Chasing project, all products such as compiled seismic data, earthquake and moment tensor catalogs will be publicly available.
