Whether an ambulance is required, traffic needs to be managed or an uninterrupted supply of power, gas and water needs to be guaranteed, control rooms are of critical importance for the security and well-being of humans in various areas of life. However, they are usually understood as closed units, often even without windows, where human operators interact with stationary and desktop-based interfaces. Taking a broader view and research approach "beyond the control room" seems appropriate for several reasons (e.g. smart environments offering data and interaction capabilities, better cooperation between fieldworkers and control room operators, demand for more flexible working models). This proposal scales research “beyond the control room” in a variety of ways. We aim at (1) scaling reproducible studies for control rooms interaction by comparing and measuring effects of different simulations and evaluation settings in terms of immersion, physiological responses of participants, and subjective realism, (2) scaling interactions in the control room to the personal by including features to allow operators to self-manage their attention state, and (3) scaling operators' interactions beyond physical control rooms by considering interaction opportunities that rely on cooperation with fieldworkers and think of control rooms as spaces rather than places of control.
