Project Details
Natural and experimental constraints on the behaviour of Re in the Earth’s crust: Part B - hydrothermal transport of Re and Mo-Re fractionation
Subject Area
Mineralogy, Petrology and Geochemistry
Term
since 2023
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 521623052
Rhenium (Re) is a critical metal for high-tech applications that is essentially mined from molybdenite found in porphyry ore deposits. In this project, an understanding will be developed, how Re is transported by hydrothermal fluids and what the conditions are for enrichment of Re in molybdenite. The thermodynamic models of Re solubility in fluids generated here will allow for developing conceptual models for the enrichment of Re in natural systems, such as the porphyry systems found in northern Greece.
