The aim of the Priority Program is to allow scientists at German universities to carry out independent projects in Antarctica and, for comparisons, also in the Arctic, using the logistics, for example, of the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) in Bremerhaven. It is also for this purpose, that the AWI operates the research vessel “Polarstern”, which is owned by the Federal Republic of Germany, as well as the Georg von Neumayer Research Station in Antarctica. Scientists, who are funded in this coordinated program of the DFG, are provided with the infrastructure free of charge according to available capacities, while the DFG only bears direct project costs (personnel, equipment, consumables, etc.) as well as travel and transport costs of expedition participants. In the current program phase (2019-2024), research is intended to focus on four overarching research topics:• Gateways to lower latitudes• Dynamics of climate system components• Responses to climate change• Improved understanding of polar processes and mechanisms
