Many vertebrates rely on acoustic information for social vocalization and navigation. Yet, at present, we have a limited understanding of vocalization networks. This project describes two sets of experiments that aim to measure neural activity in a large-scale neural network composed of frontal cortex, striatum, and primary motor cortex in awake, vocalizing bats. The project consists of two work-packages. The first work package aims to study neural activity in echolocating animals. The second work package aims to study neural signals in animals that are surrounded by other individuals. Both projects aim to measure neural activity in silent and noisy environments, and they use similar experimental approaches, which enable cross-project interactions and data comparisons.
