Magnetic fields on galactic scales (B04)
Subject Area
Astrophysics and Astronomy
Term
since 2023
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 500700252
In B4 we investigate the role magnetic fields play during the process of massive star formation, by means of real observations of polarised radiation and corresponding synthetic observations of 3D MHD simulations. We will pursue a holistic, multi-wavelength approach studying synchrotron radiation, Zee-man splitting and polarised dust emission, from the ISM in galaxies to individual molecular clouds. Confronting simulations and observations we study what can be learned about the interplay and rela¬tive importance of turbulence, gravity, magnetic fields and the chemical state of the ISM.
