Subject Area
Social and Cultural Anthropology and Ethnology
Term
since 2023
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 258523721
The anthropological project investigates negotiations of belonging in relation to scents and fragrances in urban publics. The project is based on ethnographic research on olfactory belonging in Istanbul and a migratory neighbourhood in Berlin. What role do contested scents play within social dynamics of power in their entanglement with diverse sensory aesthetics in these two urban contexts? The project seeks to analyse the sensual-aesthetic experiences, affects, and emotions of differently positioned actors in their struggles for social belonging and conviviality in urban publics.
