custEMx - Sustainable software for computational electromagnetics

Subject Area Geophysics
Term since 2023
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 528747483

Geophysical electromagnetic survey techniques are indispensable for the society for the exploration of mineral, groundwater, geothermal, or hydrocarbon resources. In the field of computational electromagnetics, research commonly focuses on methodological achievements and case studies. Therefore, the options to develop and provide sustainable codes for numerical solutions are very limited in the framework of geophysical project proposals. The research call for quality-assured and re-usable software developments provides a unique opportunity to deal with software engineering aspects, which is of great importance for the electromagnetic community nowadays. CustEM is currently one of very few open-source modeling tools for 3D electromagnetics worldwide. Building upon six years of experience in advancing our open-source project, we aim to upgrade the code base to ensure the long-term sustainability by consistently addressing the FAIR4RS standards. Another important goal is to improve the interaction with the EM community. We aim to establish a common code and benchmark repository and to organize events for knowledge exchange with support of our international cooperation partners.
