The objective is to design a simulation tool that cleverly combines fluid and kinetic algorithms in such a way that the full physics of reconnection processes can be covered with as little computational effort as possible. The tool will be built in three steps: Hamiltonian formulation and closure of the fluid moment equations, extension of geometric particle-in-cell methods to the relativistic case for the description of kinetic effects and a structure-preserving bulk coupling of the two. Ba-sed on the developed research code we will study the physics of the plasmoid instability to under-stand astrophysical jets.
