The chemistry of the 2-phosphaethynolate anion ([PCO]–) and its heavier homologues has attracted intense research interest in recent years. Boron-substituted derivatives of these anions remain rare, however, adding a boron-based substituent would potentially open a range of new research avenues, providing a handle to control the sterics, electronics, hybridization, bonding and oxidation states of the substituent. Building on our recent results in the synthesis of boron-substituted phosphaketenes, this proposal aims to investigate the versatile reactivity of borylated phospha- and arsaketenes, towards the synthesis of new B,E-containing materials and heterocycles that are expected to have interesting optoelectronic and bond-activating properties.
