High power laser beam source at a wavelength of 515 nm

Subject Area Production Technology
Term Funded in 2024
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 531273907

The proposal addresses the purchase of a high power laser beam source at a wavelength of 515 nm with a maximum laser beam power of 3 kW and a minimum fiber core diameter of 150 μm. Accessories include a beam deflection unit (scanner), a fixed optic, and two fiber optic cables. Transportation, commissioning and training are included. The significantly increased absorption coefficient at 515 nm compared to conventional solid-state or semiconductor lasers in the wavelength range of about 1,000 nm allows novel process regimes in copper processing and a significant increase in efficiency for heat conduction welding/heating processes as well as stable process control for deep penetration laser beam welding with metal vapor keyhole. For this reason, the device will be used primarily for research work on laser beam welding of copper-aluminum composites based on a near-eutectic melt, on thermal joining of copper-plastic composites regarding the influence of heating and cooling rates on the mechanical-technological properties of the composite, and on the influence of the keyhole shape on the spectral process emissivity during copper welding.
