All-Permanent-Magnet 14.5-GHz ECR Ion Source

Subject Area Optics, Quantum Optics and Physics of Atoms, Molecules and Plasmas
Term Funded in 2023
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 531528069

The proposal asks for a special type of ion source for atomic and molecular collision experiments that are of particular relevance for the physics of neutron-star collisions. The to be acquired instrument is a state-of-the-art all-permanent-magnet 14.5-GHz electron-cyclotron-resonance ion source (ECRIS) which can efficiently produce (metallic) multiply charged atomic ions and molecular ions from evaporable sample material. This ECRIS will deliver much higher ion-beam intensities than what is currently available to the Giessen Atomic- and Molecular Physics Group and, thus, greatly enhance the group's research capabilities at its experimental set-ups in Giessen and at external large-scale research facilities such as the synchrotron radiation source PETRA III operated by DESY in Hamburg and the heavy-ion storage ring CRYRING operated by GSI in Darmstadt. The ECRIS will contain only permanent magnets, such that it does not require the operation of power supplies for magnet coils as larger ECRIS do. Consequently, the power consumption of the asked for instrument will be comparatively modest allowing for a sustainable operation in a university laboratory. The highly integrated design of the ECRIS and its technical periphery such as the radio-frequency (RF), gas inlet, and water-cooling systems will facilitate an easy transport to the above mentioned research locations, where the instrument will enable world-unique experiments on the interaction of charged quantum matter with x-rays and particle beams.
