Functional 3D Photonic Films from Polymer Beads

Subject Area Experimental Condensed Matter Physics
Term from 2001 to 2008
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5317462

It is the goal of this proposal to develop methods for the preparation of functional, structured three-dimensional photonic crystals for the use in the visible wavelength region. To perform this task we will template films of crystallized polymerlattices, because they are rather flexible with regard to structuring. At the same time they are interesting model systems. During the duration of the 'Schwerpunkt' (6 years) we will tackle problems like (i) the epitaxy of polymer beads to produce heterostructures, (ii) the controlled incorporation of threedimensional defects and (iii) light emission inside a photonic structure. The basis for this work is the synthesis of various functional monodisperse polymer beads. The methods for their crystallization will be improved with the emphasis on the development of methods for an epitactical crystallization of different polymerlattices to create heterostructures. Ways for structuring/patterning of the photonic films (e-beam, ion-beam and X-ray lithography) will be investigated as well as the formation of inorganic templates or metallodielectrics to open a full photonic bandgap in the visible region. With regard to functionalization we will especially work on the infilling with organic semiconductors (organic LEDs with a photonic structure) and on switchable photonic structures (rubbery constitution, which can be deformed mechanically).
