Spin+Sensing: Nanoscale spin-phenomena revealed using NV magnetometry (A12*)

Subject Area Experimental Condensed Matter Physics
Term since 2024
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 268565370

Project A12 employs quantitative magnetometry using nitrogen vacancy (NV) color centers in diamond to explore the nanoscale origin of novel spin phenomena in two dimensional van der Waals magnets. While these materials are emerging candidates for ultrathin antiferromagnetic spintronics, e.g. due to well-defined heterostructures with atomically-flat interfaces, the nanoscopic origin of effects like exchange bias remains elusive. We will focus on understanding exchange bias in antiferromagnet/ferromagnet heterostructures based on knowledge of the nanoscale domain structures and coupling obtained from NV magnetometry. In addition, we will use NV center based spectroscopy to ascertain magnonic spin dynamics in these systems.
