Applicant Dr. Manuela Glaser
Subject Area Developmental and Educational Psychology

Term since 2024
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 534092178

The present research proposal aims at supplementing the existing IMPEUV model of Glaser, Lengyel, et al. (2022) on the cognitive processing of uncertain information by further influencing factors and to support it empirically. This will be done using an image of a reconstruction of the Temple of Athena of the ancient city of Pergamon with accompanying audio text, where the reconstruction contains both scientifically confirmed and uncertain architectural elements. In five empirical online studies on Prolific, the following factors influencing the cognitive processing of the certain and uncertain architectural elements of the reconstruction will be investigated: the trustworthiness and expertise of the information source, scientific justifications of the uncertainties, the congruence of the information with prior knowledge structures, and epistemic reception goals. The retention performance of the visual features of the architectural elements, the retention performance of their uncertainties, the retention performance of uncertainty justifications, the perceived plausibility of the information as well as the perceived relevance of the information are to be recorded. This project aims to improve the connectivity of the IMPEUV model to existing similar research areas and its suitability for application to concrete learning situations.
