Boron-based hydrides such as [R3BH]−, R = organic group, are effective stoichiometric hydride transfer reagents with high hydricities. They are widely used in synthetic chemistry for the reduction of carbonyl compounds. However, the high energy cost associated with their multistep preparations, starting from alkali metals, precludes their large-scale implementation. We will target in our 3-year program the electrochemical synthesis of borohydride catalysts for the hydrogenation of polar C=O bonds, such as those found in ketones, esters, and CO2. This is a unique and more sustainable approach to chemical synthesis as harmful waste associated with stochiometric use of chemical reductant is avoided.
