Applicant
Dr. Klaus Tauer
Subject Area
Preparatory and Physical Chemistry of Polymers
Term
from 2002 to 2008
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5356840
The goal of the project is the investigation of controlled radical heterophase polymerizations in water. Special emphasis is placed on the following points: 1. Preparation of emulsifier-free, highly concentrated polymer dispersions by radical polymerization in the presence of 1,1-diphenyl ethylene (DPE). Especially the possibilities of this rather unusual method regarding the synthesis of block copolymer dispersions by radical polymerization should be further examined on the base of current investigations in our laboratory on the role of DPE in radical heterophase polymerizations. 2. Development of a procedure to carry out seeded controlled radical emulsion polymerizations. The goal of this topic is the transfer of well established and successfully working controlled radical polymerizations in bulk or solution to aqueous systems. A prerequisite is the development of procedures to get stable swollen seed particles which will serve as nano-reactors for the further polymerizations.
