QCD at scales of a few GeV

Subject Area Nuclear and Elementary Particle Physics, Quantum Mechanics, Relativity, Fields
Term from 2002 to 2010
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5469182

In the last ten years lattice QCD has developed into a powerful tool for calculating nonperturbative hadron properties with controllable precision. Since only a few of the simplest quantities can be calculated directly, the combination of lattice calculations with other perturbative and non-perturbative approaches to QCD has the broadest perspective. We propose making lattice calculations in three areas: 1) Transition form factors, in particular for the transition Ng > D. 2) The magnetic susceptibility of the quark condensate, which is important for understanding nucleon magnetic moments. 3) Hadronic matrix elements (such as bag parameters) needed to calculate decay rates in b-quark physics. These calculations are particularly timely because, with the help of the operator product expansion and QCD sum rules, they can be used to calculate several observables that are relevant for ongoing experiments at TJNAF, HERMES and B-factories.
