Error production in bilinguals: to what extent are errors strategic?

Subject Area Applied Linguistics, Computational Linguistics
Term since 2024
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 536204328

This project aims to better understand the factors that influence the speech errors made by bilinguals in the face of word-finding difficulties. More specifically, it will use picture naming tasks to quantify and qualify errors and to isolate the potential influence on errors of strategic processes from factors that are known to influence bilingual spoken word production. Two different populations will be investigated: bilingual individuals with aphasia, and language-unimpaired bilinguals with a range of proficiency levels. The project will be completed with computational modelling of bilingual spoken word production. This research is expected to give new insights in bilingual word production and in the nature of the relationship between errors, individual factors and both cognitive and metacognitive influences.
