400 MHz NMR console

Subject Area Molecular Chemistry
Term Funded in 2024
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 536629661

The 400 MHz NMR three-channel device with wide-bore magnet of the MagRes network, located in the MagRes NMR spectrometer pool at the Institute for Inorganic and Analytical Chemistry (IAAC) of the Albert-Ludwigs-University of Freiburg, is the main research NMR spectrometer at the IAAC. Both high-resolution and solid-state NMR experiments are carried out with this device. The focus of application lies in extensive heteronuclear measurements: both in the form of correlation experiments and in the direct detection of nuclei such, as e. g. 19F, 31P, 7Li, 119Sn, 11B, 71Ga, 129Xe, 23Na, 27Al, 93Nb, 195Pt, 29Si, 14N, 47/49Ti, 109Ag and others. The field strength of 9.4 Tesla is ideal for measuring many of these nuclei, since the large frequency ranges of the chemical shift and the effective chemical-shift relaxation of many of these spins can lead to problems in the detection of these nuclei at higher field strengths and even broaden signals due to the fast T1 relaxation to such an extent that they can hardly be detected. Diffusion measurements with different nuclei are carried out numerously, as well as measurements at varying temperatures, especially at low temperatures. In addition, as part of the MagRes network, the device not only offers the main users, but all users at the University of Freiburg measurement options that are not available with any other NMR spectrometer at the this site (e. g. 19F,X{1H}, 1H,X{19F}, X{1H,19F}). It also makes an important contribution to the supply of solid-state NMR measurements. The console of this spectrometer is now more than 16 years old and urgently needs to be renewed. Since the current console has now been declared "out of service" by the manufacturer, the supply of spare parts is not guaranteed in the future. The new purchase of the console not only ensures the operational safety of this indispensable device, but also at the same time the hardware (e. g. through modern "multi-receive" technology) is modernized and the available experiments are brought up to date, so that the competitiveness of the research supported by this NMR spectrometer can also be permanently guaranteed for the future. The modernization of the console of this important 400 MHz NMR spectrometer is therefore given the highest priority by the MagRes network of the Albert-Ludwigs-University of Freiburg. We expect that the service life of the 16-year-old and very stable magnet with only moderate helium consumption (approx. 180 L/a) will be completely sufficient to be able to operate the NMR spectrometer with the new console for its expected life time.
