Exchange-coupled Homo- and Heteropolynuclear Complexes

Subject Area Inorganic Molecular Chemistry - Synthesis and Characterisation
Term from 2002 to 2009
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5366959

The research proposal, based on our recent results, is divided in two areas of preparative coordination chemistry in conjunction with magnetochemical investigations of the rationally synthesized complexes: investigations of heteropolynuclear complexes with different molecular topology exhibiting irregular spin-state structures and spin frustration, and of metal-ligand radical complexes based on the facile formation of radical ligands by aerial oxidation. Both areas constitute an integrated program for the systems to be studied and are aimed to obtain "high-spin" molecules. The resulting complexes will be characterized by different spectros-copic methods (Ultraviolet-Visible, Electron Paramagnetic Resonance and eventually Mössbauer), magnetic susceptibility measurements and by X-ray crystallography. Electrochemistry will provide more knowledge on the potentials of the redox processes involved in general and in particular about the viability of facile formation of radicals by air. The proposed project is expected to have wide impact on chemical science in general and will greatly increase the scope of molecular magnetism.
