The development of technological assistance systems (TA) in the care sector is controversially discussed. While science, politics, and important actors in the care sector assume that TA can make an important contribution to securing and increasing care quality in light of demographic change and staff shortages, representatives of a social concept of care fear that the care relationship and the (recognition of the) individuality of dependent persons will be endangered by the technification of care. Technological development in the care sector thus takes place within a field of tension in which different normative understandings of care quality and individuality compete. Against this background, the research project investigates (1) how contradictory understandings of care quality can be adequately taken into account and 'translated' into technology in TA development; (2) the extent to which it is possible to take into account the degrees of freedom and unexpected behaviour of individuals in the development of a sensor-based TA that records, analyses and evaluates gradual and acute changes in the behaviour of dependent persons in an automated manner; (3) how a sociologically reflective TA development can be realised, which reflects its basic assumptions, and in this way ensures improvements in ambulant care settings.
