Magnetic Exchange via Borane Anions (3c-2e bonds)

Subject Area Inorganic Molecular Chemistry - Synthesis and Characterisation
Term from 2002 to 2009
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5368189

The objective of this project is to develop and use, novel synthetic methods to prepare molecular multispin systems with magnetic properties. We intend to use paramagnetic, bioctahedral metal complexes and conjugated polycarboxylate coligands to construct polynuclear complexes with high-spin ground states. The nuclearity of the assemblies will be controlled by the number of the carboxylate functions. The type and magnitude of the magnetic exchange interactions will be adjusted by the extended conjugated pi-system of the organic spacer molecule. We plan to build a range of various homo- and heterobimetallic species (a library). This will allow us to determine the composition and the spin ground state of the aggregates. The chemical and physical properties of the complexes will be characterized by cyclic voltammetry, IR spectroscopy, UV/Vis spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography, magnetic susceptibility measurements and high-field EPR spectroscopy.
