Pictorial Narratives and Visual Staging of Antiziganist Motifs (1848-1930)

Subject Area Art History
Term since 2024
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 463005852

The subproject uses methods from art history and visual studies to investigate the significance of modern pictorial narratives. Some of them continue stereotypical motifs and subjects handed down from the past adapting and transforming them as well as stabilizing them over the period under investigation. Others are new pictorial narratives that have developed in the context of social and cultural change. The TP asks about the underlying visual narratives and analyses their (aesthetic or compositional) means of representation. The focus is also on trans-medial translation processes, i.e. transfers across genres that reveal an interaction between motifs, reproduction techniques and social upheavals. The project examines predominantly painting, print, commercial art and photography from Western and Eastern Europe. The TP is also responsible for setting up the multimodal database, i.e. the technical infrastructure of the research group.
