A large number of simulations of the geodynamo exist in which the flow in the Earth's core is modeled as a laminar or smooth motion. The real core flow is unknown but is expected to be highly turbulent, which means that it involves eddies covering a broad range of length and time scales. A realistic level of turbulence is inaccessible numerically because of limited computer ressources. The research proposed here intends to assess the discrepancies between simulation and reality introduced by the neglect of turbulence. This is possible by comparing laboratory dynamo experiments (which always use very turbulent flows) with numerical simulations of these experiments.
