Modification of transparent materials by temporally shaped ultrashort pulses

During the past years the dramatic development of ultrashort pulsed laser technology has fostered increased interest in a detailed understanding of the fundamental interaction of intense laser pulses with matter, while at the same time remarkable progress has been made towards applications in microstructuring for a variety of important materials, since femtosecond lasers have become increasingly available, robust and flexible. This present project proposes a comprehensive study of the interaction of temporally tailored pulses with transparent materials and has the following main objectives: 1. A detailed time-resolved investigation of the mechanisms and pathways for energy deposition into the lattice 2. manipulation and possibly control of the dynamics and kinetics of laser-induced free electron population and energy, resonant impulsive or displacive excitation of phonon modes, and laser induced transient ductility with a decrease of the stress load usually associated with laser ablation. 3. prospecting the advantages of using temporally shaped pulses and pulse trains to increase the efficiency and the quality of material modification in µm and sub-µm range - for material removal from the surface as well as for refractive index modifications in the interior of transparent materials.
