In this joint proposal, an international team consisting of three groups (Erase, Zipse, Shi) are jointly working on the application of planar-chiral organocatalysts towards the synthesis of enantiomerically pure heterocycles. Based on preliminary published examples from this team, a "green" approach avoiding any transition-metals is made. Since the design of the novel catalysts is crucial at this point, in-depth theoretical calculation is backing up this part. Extensive exchange of graduate and postgraduate students is implemented in this program.
