In this work we will develop a high-resolution large eddy simulation (LES) model dedicated to comparisons with high-resolution data obtained with advanced lidar systems. The model is based on a LES model developed at the Max-Planck-Institute for Meteorology in Hamburg. The model output will be compared with accurate and high-resolution profiles of atmospheric variables collected with a coherent Doppler wind lidar as well as a water vapor differential absorption lidar. Both lidar systems represent the state-of-the-art lidar technology. The model will also be designed for comparisons with future lidar systems which are currently under development. These comparisons will be appplied to investigate turbulent transport processes in the atmospheric boundary layer including the entrainment zone. Due to the high resoltion of the LES runs as well as the lidar data, a new quality in the investigation and validation of LES results will be reached. Comparison of the two will allow us to better unterstand and alleviate the impact of imperfections of the LES approach, test the accuracy of the data obtained with the lidar system in the entrainment zone, and to try to explain the discrepancies which have been observed between the LES results and the lidar data in the entrainment zone. Designs of a synergy of lidar measurements and LES will be propesed allowing for the development of more accurate paramerizations of boundary layer and subgridscales processes in weather prediction and climate models. We are convinced that the synergy of LES and unique lidar data will lead to a better understanding of atmospheric processes and models.
