The aim of this proposal is the detailed investigation of sea-level variations at the coast of the southern Baltic Sea for the last 200 years. For this so-called "instrumental period" a precise picture of mean sea-level trends and sea-level extremes along the coast will be developed. Main data sources are historical and recent tide gauge data and storm surge benchmarks. Historical levellings as well as repeated and permanent observations of satellites of the Global Positioning System (GPS) will be analyzed to investigate vertical crustal deformations. The obtained height changes will be related to a global reference frame and will be fitted to regional investigations in the Fennoscandian region. The final results (mean sea-level changes, probability measures for storm surges of a certain magnitude, neotectonic vertical crustal movements) with high spatial resolution represent important input information for projects 1.1, 1.5, 2.1 and 2.2. They will also help to understand processes on longer time scales and to validate/calibrate respective models.
