At the Center for Molecular Biology at the University of Heidelberg (ZMBH) and the Heidelberg University Biochemistry Center (BZH) research groups study protein functions in various organisms to investigate protein quality control, protein degradation, chaperone functions and protein folding, co-translational protein complex assembly, ribosome-associated quality control, and regulation of gene expression by transcription factors. Our research projects have a high demand for state-of-the-art mass spectrometry analyses to identify novel proteins, protein binding partners/interactomes, specific protein-protein interaction sites, post-translational protein modifications, quantitative changes in the global protein composition of organisms or organelles and spatio-temporal changes in cellular protein distribution. Our research involves a variety of different model organisms ranging from E. coli, S. cerevisiae and mice to human cell culture models and patient materials that are available in only limited amounts. To decipher the molecular mechanisms governing cellular functions in health and disease we critically depend on advanced mass spectrometry techniques, which allow fast and reliable detection and analysis of proteins and proteomes with a high dynamic range and highest sensitivity. We apply for a liquid chromatography electrospray ionisation high-resolution hybrid tandem mass spectrometry system, which will be incorporated in the core facility for mass spectrometry and proteomics at the ZMBH. The mass spectrometer will fulfil a major demand of the research groups at the ZMBH and BZH and, if capacity allows will also be available for additional research projects on the Heidelberg Molecular Life Science campus.
