Quantum information science over continuous variables

Subject Area Optics, Quantum Optics and Physics of Atoms, Molecules and Plasmas
Term from 2003 to 2006
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5405426

This project will be concerned with the (i) mathematical-theoretical foundations of quantum information science over continuous variables as well as with (ii) issues of the practical realisation using methods of quantum optics. Quantum information science with continuous-variable systems offers a promising and important alternative to the original quantum information over finite-dimensional systems such as qubits. Key topics of this research proposal include the study of the preparation and distribution of entangled states through noise channels over large distances, general "Gaussifier protocols" that map general quantum states onto Gaussian states, quantum repeaters and photon detectors that can distinguish different photon numbers with high efficiency. The mathematical-theoretical part will be concerned with the important set of Gaussian quantum operations, optimal protocols to distinguish quantum states with applications in cryptography, decoherence theory and with the application of methods from quantum information science to quantum statistical systems.
