... The following questions will be addressed by this proposal: 1) To what degree are specific trace metals found enriched in high-resolution black shale profiles from the C/T boundary and how do they vary in time in relation to the carbon isotope shift and correlative micropaleontological and organic geochemical proxies? 2) What are the paleoenvironmental and paleoceanographic consequences that may be deduced from high-resolution major and minor element patterns? 3) What is the most likely source for trace metal enrichments and are there any indications for a hydrothermal contribution? 4) Do major element patterns provide information on (cyclic?) varying weathering conditions in the source areas of terrigenous detrital material? 5) How do trace metal enrichments in C/T black shales from Demerara Rise compare with those from other settings and modern analogues of OC-rich sedimentation? 6) What is the significance of trace metal enrichments in C/T black shales in relation to global trace metal cycles and budgets?
