Aim of the proposal is to study the influence of grain size on the superplastic behaviour of Mg alloys and analyse the deformation rate sensitivity of the alloys using mechanical test approaches at different length scales. The study will focus on the Mg-Zn alloys (ZK60), whereas the addition of rare-earth elements (RE) is used to further improve the stability of the alloy during superplastic deformation at high temperature. High Pressure Torsion (HPT) will be used for grain refinement of the alloys, and thereby the influence of grain size on the plastic deformation behaviour will be studied. The deformation behaviour, including strain rate sensitivity and superplasticity will be studied in various deformation rates, temperatures and length scales, using shear punch tests (SPT), nanoindentation, as well as micro-tensile test. The project will shed light on the deformation mechanism in fine grained Mg-alloys during different deformation conditions and length scales.
