The goal of the proposed project is an improved determination of rain fall over Europe and Germany by taking into account the aerosol influence on layered and convective clouds and precipitation formation in the regional atmosphere-chemistry model REMO. Model simulations on short (days, weeks) and/or longer time scales (seasons, years) will be carried out over Europe focussing on Germany. The results of the model simulations will be evaluated by comparisons with availabe ground based and satellite observations. Model improvements concerning the aerosol treatment will include mainly secondary organic aerosol formation, aerosol chemical composition and aerosol size distribution. To describe the connection between aerosols, cloud condensation nuclei and cloud droplet number concentration we will make use of empirical relationships in a first step and include (semi-)prognostic equations in a second step.
