Multifunctional molecular structures for biotechnology and clinical diagnostics

Subject Area Organic Molecular Chemistry - Synthesis and Characterisation
Term from 2004 to 2008
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5430298

Final Report Year 2008

Final Report Abstract

The main objective of the project was the development of functional materials for the application in biotechnology and in clinical diagnostics. New indicator dyes have been developed that enabled the detection of saccharides in aqueous solution or the determination of ethanol in beer and wine. The optical sensors were also combined with miniaturised sensor modules to develop cheap and small measurement devices. In the framework of the project, the method of molecular imprinting of polymer layers was evaluated. While no clear correlation between imprinting and tailored selectivity could be achieved, new international contacts were established. As a consequence, two EU project applications were successful so that on-going research can be continued. The research in the field of nanomaterials was very successful. New fluorescent nanoparticles for medical research were developed, that enable the continuous monitoring of analyte ions such as chloride, sodium or pH. This is highly relevant for the development of new medication or for the investigation of mechanisms in living cells. This work is also continued within DFG- and EU-projects.
