The development of new classes of chromophores is highly relevant to several field as diverse as medicine and materials. These molecules are often based on organic fragment containing sometimes light main-group elements. In contrast, the heavier main-group analogs are much rarer. However, it is well-known that the incorporation of a heavy atom in a given chromophore scaffold can have dramatic effects on the optoelectronic properties. This project aims to develop synthetic protocols to introduce antimony and bismuth in luminescent scaffolds and study the effect on the photophysical properties. Aside from the intrinsic advance in fundamental science, the study and the discovery of these new compounds could be beneficial for the design of switch-on/off probes.
