This project is aimed at the study of low-dimensional correlated electron systems using the two conceptually simple but highly effective techniques angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and scanning tunnelling microsopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS). Experiments focus on measuring the experimental band structure and Fermi surface as well as the sample topography and local electron density of states in artificial, ordered one- and two-dimensional structures on metallic and semiconducting surfaces. The goal is to understand the interactions of the electrons in their environment within the low-dimensional system as well as beyond its confinement. From the experimental point of view, the project will provide the opportunity to refine the knowledge in ARPES as wll as to expand the experience in local scanning probe microscopy and spectroscopy.
