The aim of the project is the investigation of carbon nano-peapods by scanning force microscopy and spectroscopy in ultrahigh vacuum and at low temperatures. First, the correlation between structural, local electronic and mechanical properties of carbon nano-peapods will be studied by dynamic non-contact atomic force microscopy. Second, the formation mechanism of carbon nano-peapods by means of molecular manipulation and direct observation by NC-AFM will be investigated. The final goal of the project is the manufacturing of a "perfect" nano-bearing. All these experiments require UHV-based NC-Afm methods of highest technical performance including threedimensional force field spectroscopy with true atomic resolution on curved surfaces which only recently became available as demonstrated for pure single-walled carbon nanotubes.
